Fabulous Friday!

It is a hive of activity around here!  We finished up most of our insects, they are now crawling on the hallway walls...

We talked some more about Martin Luther King and how we can continue his dream of making the world a better place.  These wonderful kindergartners did a great job in today's Martin Luther King assembly.  They really listened to the different student speakers - it was good to have the many ideas we have been talking about shared by other students.  Then there was all of the beautiful voices....and.....my little video will not load onto this page so I will try to email it to you!

It was a very sweet day in Room 2...

Tuesday!

Another wonderful day in Room 2!

We worked a lot on our writing today, focusing on "describing words" - words that help us see other words better (adjectives)!  And we blended syllables until the cows came home - it was so fun clapping them out we couldn't stop!  We also played a new game on the Smart Board using word families.

More discussion about the brave civil rights workers continued with a great book "This Is The Dream".  It's heart-warming to witness these kind, thinking kindergartners working out the world's problems!

Monday!

It was wonderful to have a full class again.....for a little while anyway until one kindergartner went home with a stomach ache! They came in extra happy and chatty - it was cute!

We always start our Mondays with the "talking stick" which gives everyone a chance to share what they did over the weekend or talk about any old thing.  These kindergartners had lots to say!  It was nice to hear from our two friends who were on vacation - we missed them!

For Language Arts we discussed the importance of details in a story and how we need to add details to stories to make them more interesting.  We closed our eyes and thought of a special place and then thought of two words to describe the area.  We also talked about the idea that printed words can represent spoken language.

We had a really wonderful discussion about Martin Luther King Jr.  This can be a challenging topic for kindergartners who haven't been exposed to racism.  I used a great book for a springboard - "Martin's Big Words".  It was amazing to see how interested your children were in the topic of civil rights, of fairness.  We exchanged ideas for forty minutes - and it was deep!

Busy workers in the morning....

We really wanted it to snow so we threw open the windows and made a wish...

And it did!

Thursday!

A quick task at our desk for a little warm-up - we are working on a rhyming insect book this week so we color and cut a page each morning.  Then it was on to sit-ups and planks with our teacher from the occupational therapy room who also teaches us handwriting - Ms. Hanley.  We are improving our CORE STRENGTH so we can have strong bodies!

Next was a Social Skills lesson about "Space Invaders".  Ask your child what that means!

We learned a different way to arrange our paper.  Instead of using the old "hot dog" or "hamburger" orientation we are saying "portrait" or "landscape".  Test them to see if they still remember it!

During our literacy time we talked about the main character, and settings.  It is so fun to teach this group - they just soak it up and are so very, very smart!  Loved "In the Tall, Tall Grass", another Denise Fleming book.  We read some more of our Insect book and learned some amazing new facts!

Part of our math time was spent on TEEN NUMBERS and addition - using kindergartners which was very fun!  Math tub time was loud and happy!

We had a good little talk about favorite things like colors and Batman and how both boys and girls can like ALL colors and girls can like Batman too!  I had a couple of boys volunteer that they like pink and purple - oh, how I love those boys for saying that...

Wednesday!

Can you believe that we have been in school for...

  70 days.......(photo by Rowan)!

I asked these kindergartners to squeeze together for a quick picture.....and they did!

We read a beautiful book by Denise Fleming "The First Day of Winter", and did a story re-telling activity.  I have such smart students!

We enjoyed our Math work places and learned a new game....

And read with our Reading Buddies in the afternoon!
