Monday!

Wow, these kindergartners got right back into the swing of things after a four-day weekend...I am very impressed!

We started out the day with a visit from our school counselor, Ms. DeSimone who shared a great book with us, "Words Are Not For Hurting".  Good dialogue followed.  Big focus on the following:  "Your words belong to you and you can choose how you use them."  We also want our students to remember to use "friendly words" not "hurtful words".  Of course we will work on this ALL year!

On to our literacy jobs after some moving-around songs and a scary little finger-play about a Tyrannosaurus Rex eating all of the dinosaurs who come out to play in the land-of-the-lost one day.  Oh, and a few stories - "A Dog Needs a Bone" (they loved finding all of the bones in the illustrations) and "Duck on a Bike" (one of Ms. Keller's favorites).  I let them know that they have been "reading" covers since they first discovered books, and when they look at a cover picture they are doing something good readers do when they get ready to read!  I pointed out that good readers also think about the title of a book , and that using the cover and title are two ways readers figure out what a book is about.

Before math, Logan's dad brought in birthday cupcakes AND photos of the boat they live on.  It was fascinating - lots of good questions were asked!

Next it was math  where we used Unifix cubes and students (who were butterflies) to explore number operations - 1 less, and count forwards and backwards, as we read Butterfly Countdown.

Then came science where we started our exploration of Paper. We observed properties of different kinds of paper and went on a paper hunt!  We will use the different kinds of paper to draw on, fold and drop water on!

More books, more working on friendships, more having fun at free choice......a good day...and I sent home the water bottles that should have come home on Wednesday!
